Modern Severe-Service Vehicles

About 5,000 Miles

Many manufacturer severe-service schedules shorten the interval when a vehicle experiences towing, dusty roads, extended idling, repeated short trips, heavy loads, or frequent stop-and-go driving.

Modern Synthetic-Oil Vehicles

5,000–10,000 Miles

Many modern vehicles using the required synthetic oil can operate within this range under normal conditions. Follow the manufacturer's schedule or oil-life monitor rather than extending the interval based only on the oil bottle.

Do Not Ignore the Time Interval

Vehicles driven only a few miles each year can still collect moisture and fuel contamination in the oil. Follow the manufacturer's time limit even when the mileage limit has not been reached.

High Mileage Alone Is Not the Only Factor

A properly maintained vehicle with more than 100,000 miles may still be able to follow its manufacturer-approved interval. Another vehicle with fewer miles may need more frequent service because of severe use, oil consumption, or poor maintenance history.

The safest recommendation is based on the engine's actual condition, not only the odometer.

Important Clarification

The 3,000-mile interval is a conservative maintenance strategy, not a universal manufacturer requirement for every high-mileage vehicle. The owner's manual and any applicable oil-life monitoring system should still be considered.

Oil Grade and Thickness

Should a High-Mileage Engine Use Thicker Oil?

Sometimes, but this decision must be made carefully. Oil viscosity affects cold-start lubrication, oil pressure, variable valve timing systems, fuel economy, bearing protection, and the speed at which oil moves through the engine.

High-Mileage Formulation

High-mileage oils are commonly formulated with seal conditioners, detergents, anti-wear additives, and other features intended for aging engines.

Same Approved SAE Grade

In many cases, the best first step is a high-mileage oil in the same viscosity grade specified by the manufacturer, such as high-mileage 5W-30 replacing standard 5W-30.

Higher SAE Grade

Moving to a thicker grade, such as changing from 0W-20 to 10W-40, should only be considered when the owner's manual allows it or a qualified technician determines that it is appropriate.

Thicker Does Not Automatically Mean Better

Some high-mileage products use a higher base-oil viscosity within the approved grade to help control oil loss and provide high-temperature protection. That is different from automatically selecting a completely different SAE grade.

Oil that is too thick for the engine can flow more slowly during startup and may interfere with systems designed around a specific viscosity. We recommend checking the manufacturer's permitted grades before making a change.
