Diagnostics & Repair Process
This is where Portillo Automotive does things differently. Your diagnostic fee isn't an extra charge when we complete the repair — it's credited toward your final bill.
A diagnostic fee covers the time and expertise required to properly test your vehicle's systems, read fault codes, inspect components, and identify the actual cause of the problem — not just guess at it. Without a proper diagnostic, a shop is essentially replacing parts hoping to find the answer, which costs you more money and does not always solve the issue. At Portillo Automotive, we believe in identifying the root cause before recommending any repair. That means you get an honest answer, not an expensive estimate built on assumptions.
Fault codes identify which system or circuit reported an issue — not which specific part failed or why. For example, a code indicating a misfiring cylinder could be caused by a spark plug, ignition coil, fuel injector, compression issue, or several other factors. Replacing parts based on the code alone often leads to unnecessary expense without solving the actual problem. A proper diagnostic pinpoints the cause so the right repair gets done the first time.
We show you. When our technicians identify a concern, we explain what we found, why it matters, and what happens if it is addressed now versus later. We document our findings and give you the information you need to make an informed decision — without pressure. If something can safely wait, we will tell you that too. Our goal is your long-term trust, not a one-time transaction.
Always. We will never perform work you have not approved. If our inspection reveals additional concerns beyond what you originally brought the vehicle in for, we will contact you, explain what we found, and give you the option to address it now or later. The decision is always yours.
Service & Communication
Repair time depends entirely on the type of service, parts availability, and how many vehicles are ahead of yours. Simple services like oil changes, battery replacements, or brake inspections can often be completed the same day. More complex repairs — engine work, transmission service, suspension overhauls — may require additional time, especially if specialty parts need to be ordered. We communicate clearly about timelines before we begin, and we update you if anything changes. You will never be left wondering where your vehicle stands.
We price our services based on quality parts, qualified technicians, and work that is backed by our warranty. Shops that charge significantly less often cut costs somewhere — through cheaper parts, rushed labor, or skipping steps in the diagnostic process. We have seen many customers come to us after a lower-priced repair did not hold or made the problem worse. We would rather give you an honest price upfront and fix it correctly the first time than have you return with a bigger problem.
Yes. Our repairs are backed by a parts and labor warranty. If a covered repair fails within the warranty period, we will address it. We will explain the specific warranty terms for your repair before we begin work, so you know exactly what is covered and for how long. We stand behind our work — that is not just something we say.
We understand that unexpected repairs can be difficult financially. Contact us to discuss available payment options — we will work with you to find a solution that gets your vehicle safely back on the road.
This depends on the repair. In some cases we can work with customer-supplied parts, but we are unable to warranty labor on parts we did not source because we cannot verify their quality or compatibility. If you have questions about a specific situation, reach out and we will discuss your options honestly.
General Shop Information
We service a wide range of domestic and import vehicles including Ford, Chevrolet, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, RAM, and many others. If you are unsure whether we can help with your specific vehicle, call us at (413) 400-2051 or send us a message — we are happy to answer before you make the trip.
Not necessarily — but it depends on the light and how your vehicle is behaving. A steady check engine light with no other symptoms can often be diagnosed at your next convenient opportunity. A flashing check engine light typically indicates a more serious issue that could damage your engine if you keep driving. If your vehicle is also overheating, losing power, making unusual sounds, or behaving differently than normal, it is best to stop driving and have it inspected as soon as possible. When in doubt, call us and describe what you are experiencing — we will help you determine how urgent the situation is.
